Moderated by Telum Media’s Olivia Mayer, the session gave attendees a closer look at how the Harian KOMPAS newsroom operates, the considerations behind its editorial decisions, and the types of stories that attract the attention of its journalists and editors.

Hilmi also gave a closer look at the role of the Culture Desk and what gives a story wider public relevance beyond a ceremonial or promotional angle. The conversation explored the importance of context, credible spokespeople, and substantive corporate involvement in initiatives.

He also shared practical guidance for PR and communications professionals on what makes a pitch stand out, common gaps in the approaches received by the newsroom, and the supporting materials that can help journalists assess a story. The discussion highlighted the value of understanding a publication’s audience and editorial priorities, rather than relying on prominent names or spectacle alone.

The session also considered how changing audience habits, digital publishing, social media, and AI are influencing cultural journalism, including the challenge of communicating complex subjects without oversimplifying them.
