(SG) Event Wrap-up: AI and the Evolving Role of Publishers

Telum Media hosted its latest in-person event in Singapore on Tuesday, 21st April 2026, in partnership with SOPA. The panel featured Alan Soon, Founder & CEO of Splice Media; Chan Yu Mei, Senior Research Director at CNBC; and Dr. Wong Hin-Yan, EVP Strategic Planning and Head, APAC Intelligence at Weber Shandwick. The discussion was moderated by Vishnu Padmanabhan, Asia Correspondent and News Editor at The Economist, and was followed by a Q&A session and networking.

Held at The Hive, the session explored how newsrooms are navigating the balance between AI adoption and human editorial judgement. Panellists discussed the importance of maintaining strong news judgement while leveraging AI tools to analyse audience data and optimise content strategy. The discussion also highlighted the need for publishers to create meaningful value for audiences amid the growing volume of information and shifts in search behaviour.

The conversation further examined how AI-enabled newsrooms may develop in the future, including the need to sustain audience engagement while addressing concerns around the impact of automation on newsroom roles.
